Why Every College Student Should be on LinkedIn

At any given moment five or ten people may be reviewing your resume or reading your cover letter. At the same time 575,000,000 people could be viewing your LinkedIn profile. No, that was not a typo. The days of sending resumes and hoping for an email or a call are long gone and frankly, they have been for a while now. The first thing any employer does when searching for job candidates is go to LinkedIn and if they can’t find you there, guess what? You probably aren’t getting that job. 

So, the next time you have 10 minutes free, do yourself a favor and create that LinkedIn profile. Below are some tips that will help you appear more professional online. We’ll have more blogs that go deeper into different LinkedIn tactics as well.

Use a professional headshot

If you don’t have one go get one. Nobody wants to see the selfie you took during spring break in Cabo and they especially don’t want to see that if they are considering hiring you. Headshots can be a little pricey but consider it an investment in your future. 

Join groups

Find three to five groups on LinkedIn that you are interested in or that you have knowledge about. Don’t just join these groups, participate in the conversations! Being active on LinkedIn shows that you have a deeper understanding of what you claim to know. 

Make connections

This one seems obvious but a lot of people don’t do it. Start connecting with people who work for companies that you’re interested in. Once they connect back send them a message introducing yourself and asking what it’s like to work for that company (maybe even setup a time to speak over the phone).
