Students studying marketing, communications, and IT should all consider a Quicken Loans internship.

But how can you secure one? Competitive internships sometimes receive thousands of applications for just a few coveted spots. Educating yourself about the internship opportunity and becoming familiar with the application process is your first step.

When recent graduates or young professionals want to gain experience in a new field, internships can lay a strong foundation. Internships provide the chance to learn new skills, network with professionals, and gain knowledge about the industry. Still, while internships are a great stepping stone at the beginning of your career, they aren’t always easy to secure.

Internships at Quicken Loans are no different — they are both beneficial and hard to come by. Students who want to gain experience or knowledge in fields like human resources or mortgage banking will find that and more through Quicken Loans and the Rock family of companies. This year, more than 1,000 interns participated in the program, which drew more than 22,000 applications.

The Quicken Loans internship provides more than just job experience. It is seriously devoted to helping interns advance their careers. From professional panels to one-on-one sessions with recruiters, interns can expect to receive more than just on-the-job training.

In fact, one unique feature of the Quicken Loans internship is its policy that allows interns to shadow anyone in the company upon request. Central to the company’s ethos is a set of 19 ISMs, also referred to as core philosophies, which all employees are committed to embodying. One of these ISMs is “Yes before no.” This means that when a new intern requests to shadow even the company’s founder, they can expect a “yes” whenever possible.

In addition, Quicken Loans is committed to giving back to its community through the internship program. Recent interns participated in the city of Detroit’s Summer in the City program. This connected them with area youth and provided the chance to participate in community outreach.

Finally, the Quicken Loans internship program is deeply committed to each individual intern and their personal goals. Interns are paired with supportive team leaders who are genuinely interested in what each intern wants to get out of the program. Leaders work together with interns to connect them with opportunities across the company and sometimes even across different companies within the Rock family.

This unique commitment allows the chance to learn about the industry from many different angles. Though some students might consider an internship with Quicken Loans to be reserved for aspiring fintech professionals or future mortgage bankers, the company actually employs people of many more backgrounds and from nearly all college majors.

How to Apply for a Quicken Loans InternshipQuicken Loans internship interview

Quicken Loans is owned by the Rock Family of Companies, so all internships go through Rocket Careers.

Applicants use the regular talent acquisition portal for the Rock family of companies to apply. Here, you can input contact information, experience, and fields of interest to find opportunities that will be a good fit for you. Internships are available in many different fields, including areas like software development, contract security, and project coordination.

Once you’ve filled out a contact form, a campus recruiter will be in touch for an initial interview. This first interview typically only lasts only 10-15 minutes and helps the recruiter to learn more about you and your career goals. The recruiter then matches you with the team leader best suited for your unique goals and interests. You’ll then have a second interview which lasts a bit longer, but still less than half an hour in most cases.

Finally, if you seem like a good fit after the first two interviews, you’ll be scheduled for a final interview with your potential team leader and team members. Some of the qualities that these team members often look for include innovation, hard work ethic, competitive spirit, and commitment to teamwork. If you can convince your interviewers that you have a lot to offer, you’re likely to land a spot as a Quicken intern.

Quicken Loans internships are paid and generally are full-time in nature. Interns are treated like full-time employees and are eligible for benefits including dental, vision, and healthcare.

Most internships at Quicken are one semester long and accept applications a few months in advance. For example, during the summer of 2020, applications were open for internships taking place during fall of 2020.

Externships are also available at Quicken Loans, primarily for students who are unable to commit an entire college semester to the program. For example, student athletes who train throughout the school year have participated in three-week long summer externships at Quicken to learn more about the company and the opportunities it holds.

The work environment at Quicken Loans and the rest of the Rock family of companies tends to be both highly productive and highly collaborative. Successful interns will arrive ready to work and exchange ideas.

Every intern at Quicken Loans is paired with a mentor who provides insight, advice, and feedback throughout the internship. The mentor will also help to guide your project-based work.

The internship also provides extensive professional development. Seventeen full-time employees work tirelessly as members of the intern experience team. Their jobs are devoted to making the internship program highly engaging and successful. This team comes up with intern events such as networking opportunities, LinkedIn workshops, and more. Their entire job is to make sure that interns get the most they can from the program.

Where Does the Quicken Loans Internship Take Place?Downtown Detroit

The Quicken Loans internship normally takes place at Quicken Loans headquarters in downtown Detroit. Here, it’s offered as a full-time, in-office experience.

With the COVID-19 pandemic changing plans around the world, the internship has gone remote. For the foreseeable future, interns can participate from Washington, DC, New York City, or wherever they call home.

Many students might, at first glance, think that the Quicken Loans internship is best for students who want to learn more about mortgage operations or the real estate market. In reality, though, this internship program spans many more fields and can be a great fit for nearly any major.

As Mickey Maher points out in her podcast interview, internships don’t have to be your ultimate career path, even though that’s always the goal at Quicken.

“Internships are great for figuring out what you want to do, but they’re also so amazing for figuring out what you don’t want to do for the rest of your life … Internships help you experience things you haven’t done before,” Maher says.

About Scholars

Internships and early-career jobs are unlike any others. They are often accepted months, if not years, in advance of the start date leaving plenty of time for candidates to change their minds and decide to work elsewhere, costing your team time and money.

There are two ways that have been proven to decrease renege rates for any company: keeping candidates engaged by sharing personalized information and helping them make connections with their future teammates. Companies use Scholars to accomplish both of these at scale.
