Fidelity offers one of the best internship programs for students looking to find their ideal career path. It’s a huge financial services firm, but you don’t have to have a finance degree to apply. In fact, the program accepts applicants with backgrounds in everything from art and history to accounting and Agile engineering. Fidelity is an investment brokerage and financial services company, helping millions of people manage their money. Their services include wealth management, asset management, and life insurance. Landing a Fidelity Investments internship is a great way to test the waters if you’re interested in a career in finance, investing, or consulting. Best of all, there’s a huge range of opportunities and you don’t need a background in finance to land an internship.

The Fidelity internship program offers opportunities at several company locations throughout the central and eastern United States. There are also opportunities at more than 200 investor locations in large cities such as Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. A small number of internship opportunities are also available at the company’s international locations in Ireland and India.

The Fidelity internship program offers opportunities for recent college graduates and university students in various fields. The company hires around 1,000 graduate and undergrad interns each year. You’ll find internships in customer service, wealth management, internal audits, marketing and communications, corporate finance, and human resources. There are also technical internships where students can focus on data engineering, data science, full-stack engineering, and systems engineering.

Most of Fidelity’s internships take place in the summer. Applications for the full-time summer internship program are typically posted in August the year before. The internship application window is often shortened when there is high demand. That means it’s important to apply as soon as possible to ensure your application is accepted.

How To Apply for a Fidelity Internship

The first step in applying for a Fidelity internship is to head to the company’s student page. Here, you’ll find a list of open internship opportunities at the various locations including Boston, Raleigh-Durham, Smithfield, Merrimack, and Westlake. You can also sign up to join their talent community to get notified about the latest job and internship opportunities.

If your application passes the initial screening, you’ll be invited to take an assessment or complete a video interview. The exact hiring process depends on the role you’re applying to, but most candidates will have to do both an assessment and an interview. 

Here are some assessments you may need to take:

  • Online assessments: These are untimed, but usually must be completed within five days. They examine your technical abilities, problem-solving skills, and communication style.
  • In-person assessments: For some positions, you may be asked to visit an assessment center. Here, you’ll be given real-life problems to solve while assessors watch. During these assessments, they’re mainly looking to see how well you demonstrate your strengths. They’re also looking for positivity and passion for the work.
  • Group interviews or exercises: In some cases, you’ll be asked to work with a group of other interns or team members to develop a new product or solve a challenge. You don’t have to be the leader to land the gig. The assessors are looking for how well you work with others, how you contribute, and how you work through issues.
  • Business assessment: For some positions, you’ll be asked to digest a large amount of information and present recommendations. You’ll be expected to create a written document that reflects your suggestions in a professional manner. You’ll be tested on your ability to manage risk, take calculated risks, and present options in a clear and concise way.

You may need to pass one or more assessments and some are combined in a day-long event. The process really depends on the internship position you’re applying to and how the hiring manager chooses to assess candidates. 

The company also uses digital video interviews to learn more about candidates. These interviews provide an opportunity for applicants to provide context to their resumes. It’s a great way to share your story and show why you’d be a great addition to the team. Use specific examples when answering the interview questions and focus on your strengths. Again, you’ll want to show your passion for the industry and highlight how you can help the company reach its goals.

The key with digital interviews is to be authentically yourself. Don’t try to figure out what the company is looking for and try to fit yourself in that mold. Instead, identify common values you share with the company and highlight those attributes. Answer questions in a way that’s relatable and be direct whenever possible.

Tips for Landing the Gig

One of the best ways to increase your chances of landing an internship is to do research on the company. After all, companies want to hire interns that align with their values and goals. By identifying what the company values and looks for in new hires, you can craft an internship resume and cover letter that demonstrate why you’re the best fit for the role.

Start by taking a look at Fidelity’s website. The company clearly lists what they look for in internship and job candidates on their careers site. Among their most prized values are diversity and inclusion. The company looks for candidates from all backgrounds and experiences. If you have a special way of innovating or unique insights that others may not have, make sure to highlight this in your application. 

As a student, it also helps to make a great first impression. Reach out to Fidelity hiring managers or recruiters on LinkedIn. Express your interest in upcoming internships and let the manager know how they can help you. Make specific requests and ask focused questions to learn more about the role. This shows that you’re passionate and engaged and it also helps to leave a lasting impression.

Attend on-campus or career events where Fidelity hiring managers are actively recruiting. If you’re not sure if there’s an event like this at your school, head to the careers center and ask. They’ll have a job fair list and information on other events that you can attend.
